Note 18 - The Essence of January
Winter in Bavaria
January is a fairly slow month. I mentioned this in my New Year post, but I always seem to have big expectations for it, imagining I’ll feel completely on top of my game, while forgetting just how much winter affects me. And that’s okay. Part of moving through it is finding small hobbies and things to focus on. I almost didn’t write a blog post this week because I felt like my life had been a bit boring, but on a recent call with my friend Martine, she reminded me that every day is often the most interesting, simply because it’s what resonates with most people. So here we are! This is a small window into my week. I’m also working on a bigger post all about the home and my favourite homeware, coming next week!
In the meantime, I hope you stay warm wherever you are!
What I Wore This Week
This week was all about comfort…
A true workhorse in my closet over the past few years has been this House of Dagmar cardigan, and I’m pretty sure I’ve featured it here before. Unfortunately, I shrank it a few months ago, but I managed to find the same one secondhand, and I’ll definitely be extra careful this time. I wore it over a Doên tank top with a square neckline that I find incredibly chic.

This week moved slowly after returning home from Germany on Sunday night and struggling with jet lag every day since (what can I say, I love quiet time in the morning…). It’s tempting to come back and immediately chase every goal and put pressure on ourselves, but sometimes it’s just as important to slow down and take things easy. We didn’t get much sun this week, which left me feeling more tired than usual, but the moment a few rays appeared, I stopped to capture them. I love that the common thread in these three moments is the sun and the colours it left behind, whether in the sky or in the spaces I found myself in.
This Week’s Edit
I finally recreated a soup I tried for the first time in Helsinki, and I’m sure it’ll now be on my regular recipe roster: a Finnish salmon soup. It’s a mix of leeks, carrots, potatoes and salmon in a vegetable broth with cream and lots of dill. The perfect meal for a cold winter evening!
I wasn’t sure this book would make it onto my list of recommendations since the beginning felt a bit slow, but by the end, it had turned into a real page-turner. Maybe that’s because my expectations were high from the start, as it’s set at a magazine in the early 2000s. However, it has more in common with HBO’s Girls than The Devil Wears Prada. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of those glory days of magazines and the New York setting.
I’ve been obsessed with the shearling hat trend. While I’m not sure it’s the smartest accessory to invest in, given how trendy it is, it looks incredibly warm and comfortable. I’ve seen the Totême ones everywhere, but for a more affordable option, Shepherd of Sweden makes great ones too.
Hobbies are set to be big this year, and I wanted to find a creative outlet that I could easily weave into my day-to-day life. Over Christmas, TikTok served me countless watercolour videos, which inspired me to pick up a small palette from Søstrene Grene. I used to love drawing and painting, and I’m really excited to see where this leads me.
Love, S.
