Note 46 - Deauville in August

Deauville Marina

Ever since leaving Montreal, life has been a little hectic (and it'll stay that way for a couple more weeks), so it was lovely to escape for a few days by the sea in Deauville. I had heard so much about Deauville and Trouville, and the stay lived up to it completely. We booked a last-minute Airbnb facing the marina, and the fresh sea air did wonders for me. For the first time in probably a year, I slept over 10 hours straight. The anxiety from the move and starting a new job just melted away with the sound of the waves and the seagulls.

Back to Deauville (and Trouville, since the two are so connected), it's such a charming place, with incredible seafood and storybook architecture, some houses looking like they belong in a witch's fairytale. I would absolutely recommend it, and it's left me wanting to explore more of Normandy.

In the meantime, here’s a recap of my weekend!

What I Wore This Week

Dress - Baum Und Pferdgarten (similar here) / Shoes - Aeyde

Dress - Aritzia / Bag - Totême / Sunglasses - Celine

This polka-dot dress is one of my favourite "show ponies" (an item that brings excitement into my wardrobe). It's always perfect for a date night, and it works just as well in summer with heeled sandals like I'm wearing now, or with tights and heeled boots in fall. I always feel so comfortable in it.

The second dress is one I wore a lot the year I bought it, but I lost interest in it over the past couple of years. Still, it's an easy cotton dress for a day at the beach. Ever since our move, I've realized just how many clothes I actually own, and I'm trying to be more mindful about what I keep. I don't want to hold onto things I don't wear or that don't bring me joy. I'll write a full post about this soon, but I've already cleared out so much, and Vinted has become my new best friend. This dress, though, I'm still on the fence about; it was comfortable and lovely for that type of trip, but I don’t know how much wear I would get out of it on a daily basis. Anyways, so many wardrobe reflections lately!

Typical architecture

My favourite thing about Deauville & Trouville was, without a doubt, the architecture. The moment I stepped into town, I said the houses by the sea looked like they'd been pulled straight out of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. They’re quirky and beautiful all at once. I definitely slipped into a daydream, imagining myself writing a novel here by the coast.

The food was also a delight, with the sea surrounding us; there's no shortage of incredible seafood and fish. My highlight was a little restaurant tucked away on a quieter street called Le Weekend. It was unpretentious and so delicious. We got their seasonal menu, and it was incredibly generous: mussels and coquilles Saint-Jacques for starters, chicken and steak for the mains, with three sides: the best gratin dauphinois I've ever had, some fries, and a salad. We skipped dessert, but the service was lovely, and we talked about that meal for the rest of the trip.

This Week’s Edit

Flore Flore Max Tee in Off-White

I've been really into finding good basics lately, and while I do love my Leset Margo tees, I also keep hearing so much about Flore Flore. It's an Amsterdam-based brand specializing in T-shirts and long-sleeve tees, and their signature detail is a seam running down the back. I love this off-white colour; it would look perfect with dark jeans and nice leather boots.

Le Secret Club on Substack

I stumbled on this Substack article, "Is Wellness Culture Asking Too Much of Us?", and fell down a rabbit hole reading the creator's other newsletters. It's so on-brand for this era of constant optimization. As someone who's tried ear seeds, LED masks, and eating a kiwi before bed, it hit close to home: what is the limit to wellness, and when is enough actually enough? Just genuinely interesting reflections; I love reading and talking about them.

Flattered’s Bon Bon Leather Loafers

I know I already touched on overconsumption in the What I Wore section, but I think it's also about understanding our wardrobe needs and what we actually wear. I recently sold a pair of St-Agni sandals that I found beautiful but just too uncomfortable to wear. These Flattered loafers are on my list for fall, since they seem like a great alternative to boots and sneakers (while still looking put together), and they're made from soft, supple leather, so they won't dig in.

London Falling, Patrick Radden Keefe

I haven’t loved the last two books I read, so instead of recommending them, I thought I’d share the book I’m most excited to read: London Falling. I bought it for my boyfriend, and I’m desperate for him to finish it soon so I can get started on it. It’s a nonfiction that apparently reads like a page turner about London’s criminal underworld.

Love, S.
