Note 29 - April Musings

My bike two aprils ago when it was warm enough for a ride.

Happy Sunday, and hope you’re making the most of the long weekend!

I’m currently in Toronto for a little spring getaway, but for this post, I wanted to share my week at home: the outfit I wore, the new recipe book that inspired me, a fun little outing with my friend, and a few fashion-related news items. The change of season is always a mix of feeling in a slump and then a wave of inspiration once that transition is complete, so I’m patiently waiting for the latter to come and for the flowers to bloom.

Come back next week for my Toronto guide, and in the meantime, grab a cup of tea and enjoy!

What I Wore this Week

A simple yet refined outfit for a night in the city, made even better by the fact that it’s almost entirely Scandinavian, with many pieces found secondhand.

The centrepiece is a pied-de-poule coat I discovered in Stockholm, which instantly elevates the look. I paired it with my secondhand Totême boots and their twisted jeans, which are a particularly flattering cut that really elongates the leg.

To finish, I reached for one of my forever staples: the demi-lune bag from Aesther Ekme. It tucks neatly under the shoulder, finishing the look elegantly.

Ramen Night

Totême boots

There’s a certain freshness in the air lately: It feels like the season is on the verge of shifting. This week, I’ve been really enjoying flipping through a new cookbook co-authored by Catherine St-Laurent and nutritionist Anne-Julie Tessier. It’s full of spring-ready recipes, all thoughtfully centred around four pillars of health: longevity, strength, mental well-being, and cognitive function. Plus, the book is so aesthetically pleasing, with a few scandi-inspired dishes and a beautiful butter yellow cover. I’m looking forward to trying a few dishes next week.

Another highlight was a cozy ramen night with my friend Sabine. I’ve been appreciating simple ways to meet friends recently. No need to dress up or revolve everything around drinks. I’ve never been a big drinker, but my relationship with alcohol has been evolving, and I’m becoming even more intentional about when, where and why I choose to have a glass of wine. So nights like these feel especially lovely.

And finally, the weather is just good enough to bring out my Totême boots. They pair so effortlessly with straight-leg jeans and are surprisingly comfortable for walking. I’m excited to get as much wear out of them as I can this spring.

This Week’s Edit

In the Heat of the Moment, Viveca Sten (AudioBook)

I just finished this audiobook, the 5th in the Sandham Murder series, but it could easily be listened to as a standalone crime novel. All of Viveca Sten’s books are essentially cozy crime, so there’s nothing too gruesome, there are love stories and beautiful Swedish scenery. This one is set over Midsummer in the Stockholm archipelago.

Sorry for your Glossier on Puck & Glossier’s New Strategy: Fewer Stores, Fewer Products on Business of Fashion

The news is not good for Glossier, and as someone who was once an early fan of the brand, I find it devastating to see how they’ve failed to compete with newer brands and will have to scale down their operations. I recommend these 2 articles to stay up to date on what’s happening. And in the meantime, I’ll cross my fingers they’ll never discontinue the Milky Jelly Cleanser because it’s the best cleanser ever.

Nous Agency Sample Sale - April 9 & 10

If you’re in Montreal this week, the wholesale agency Nous is hosting a sample sale featuring older collections from the brands they represent. Think lots of Scandi and European labels like StyleIn, Love Stories, Gestuz and more. I love the idea of a sample sale for getting fun pieces at a fraction of the price!

Substack: Copenhagen Moodboard

And finally, a new Substack recommendation. I spend so much time on Substack these days, and it’s truly becoming one of my favourite platforms. This one by Rachel Creeks, a Canadian in Copenhagen, is all about design, Danish inspiration and living beautifully. I highly recommend.

Love, S.
